What is Watergate scandal?
Watergate scandal is a political burglary in American history. The Republican president was campaigning to reelect for the presidential election in 1972. One of his aides, John Mitchell, made a plan to make Nixon win the election in any way. Due to this 'Watergate Scandal', US President Richard Nixon had to face even the impeachment. Moreover, Richard Nixon is the only President in the history of US Presidents who resigned from the office.
The US Presidential elections were scheduled to be held by the end of the year in 1972. Thus, a 'Committee to Re-elect the President was formed by the Republican party. In June 1972, five burglars broke into the office of the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Party headquarters, located in the Watergate complex of buildings in Washington, D.C. to plant tape-recording devices and to copy important DNC files. But the night watchman who alerted the police and the burglars were caught and taken to jail.
At first president, Nixon insisted that neither he nor any of his aides had any involvement in the break-in but the Washington Post revealed his role in the conspiracy along with five burglars.
Later on, the burglars revealed that they were pressured by the White House officials to accept the guilty. A special investigative committee was constituted by the US Senate to investigate the Watergate scandal. US President Nixon ordered Archibald Cox to be fired. This is called Saturday Night Massacre. Later, the White House allowed the release of some audio recording tapes related to the case. In July 1974 the recordings revealed that the President had used the CIA to influence the FBI investigation of the case. The Judiciary Committee of the House had approved 3 impeachment articles.
Over this, president Richard Nixon, a Republican and the 37th president of the United States and the first president in history to resign from office on 9 August 1972 and Vice-President Gerald Ford took over the Presidentship of the United States.
In this infamous case, very serious charges were leveled against as many as 69 individuals.
